More than three years after the start of the war in eastern Ukraine, the breakaway regions of Donetsk and Lugansk are trying to define their own national identity.
Eastern Ukraine has a deep historical and cultural connection with Russia. But Moscow has no intention of annexing the two separatist republics, as it did with Crimea, so it becomes essential to foster a sense of belonging to a single community. From this perspective the younger generations are critical.
